Introduction: Discover the taste of Chile’s vibrant history with Mote con Huesillo, a refreshing drink that’s much more than a thirst-quencher. This cultural gem, cherished by generations, blends unique flavors and textures to connect people with the heart of Chilean tradition.

A Legacy Steeped in History

Rooted in colonial Chile, Mote con Huesillo has a long-standing place in the country’s heritage. When Spanish settlers introduced wheat and fruit preservation techniques, locals quickly embraced them, transforming them into a drink with flavors like no other. Over time, this beverage became a crucial source of hydration and energy for field workers, adding rich history to each sip.

A Symbol of Pride in Every Sip

For Chileans, Mote con Huesillo isn’t just a treat; it’s a national icon. Its presence at Fiestas Patrias (Independence Day celebrations) highlights how deeply it’s woven into Chilean culture. During festivals, street vendors pour glass after glass to locals and visitors alike. With every cup, Chileans enjoy not just a drink but a taste of their country’s pride.

An Unforgettable Fusion of Taste and Texture

What makes Mote con Huesillo truly unique is its mix of flavors and textures. The chewy, tender mote (hulled wheat) pairs perfectly with syrupy peaches, creating a multi-sensory experience that delights everyone who tries it. Each sip combines sweetness with a hint of cinnamon warmth, leaving a lasting impression.

Timeless and Resilient: The Heart of Chilean Refreshments

Despite the rise of modern drinks, Mote con Huesillo has stood the test of time. Its lasting popularity reflects Chile’s dedication to preserving culinary traditions. This drink’s appeal shows how deeply Chileans connect with their heritage—and how proud they are to share it with the world.

For anyone visiting Chile, trying Mote con Huesillo is essential. It offers not only refreshing flavors but also a taste of Chile’s rich history. Don’t miss the chance to experience a sip of Chile’s soul!

Instructions

  1. Rinse the dried peaches well under cold water.
  2. Place them in a large bowl with 4 cups of water and soak for a few hours or ideally overnight to rehydrate and soften.
  3. Rinse the mote under cold water to remove any excess starch.
  4. In a pot, cover the mote with water and bring to a boil. Simmer for about 45 minutes to an hour until soft but still chewy. Drain and let it cool.
  5. In a large pot, add the soaked peaches along with their soaking water, sugar, cinnamon stick, and cloves if using.
  6. Add an additional 4 cups of water to the pot.
  7. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce to a gentle simmer and cook for 25-30 minutes until the peaches are tender and the liquid has thickened into a light syrup. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
  8. Remove the cinnamon stick and cloves from the syrup, then let it cool to room temperature.
  9. In each serving glass or bowl, add a generous spoonful of cooked mote, a few peaches, and pour over the sweet peach syrup.
  10. Refrigerate the drink for at least an hour before serving for a refreshing experience.
  11. Serve the Mote con Huesillo cold, with both the syrup and solid ingredients. Stir gently before drinking, allowing each sip to be a combination of the sweet liquid, soft peaches, and chewy wheat.
  12. Your homemade Mote con Huesillo is ready. ¡Buen provecho!
